I am thinking of going to the venue this weekend for the European finals, (Sept 5-8). I have never been before. I enjoy photography as a hobby and wondered which lens would be best suited. How far are spectators from the drag strip either on the bank or the grandstand? I guess the grandstand will be crammed and there will be little room to move around. I am lucky in that I have a vast choice of lenses to choose from, I realise space may be limited, especially if a tripod is needed for a larger lens and that would certainly rule out the grandstand. I'm just trying to take only what is necessary.

I’m afraid it all depends where you’re sitting on the sidelines. You’ve a quarter mile to cover either way. If you sit in the grandstand you’re going to be very near the starting line, but the other side (bankside) you’ll have a choice where you want to be wherever you want to be alongside the track no matter where you are along the track. I’d say, from personal experience, if you can get where you want to be bankside early enough, that’s where you’ll get the best photographs no matter the lens. And if you bring a long lens, a mid lens & a short lens (or one good enough to cover the lot) you can move around & get great shots with any/either.
