Police have said a suspect in a string of robberies attacked an undercover officer during a sting operation on Wednesday.

Gary police have released video footage of a sting operation where a man attacked an undercover officer with a machete, leading to another officer fatally shooting the suspect.

Lake County Sheriff's officials said Gary police officers were conducting an undercover investigation in the 3400 block of Maryland around noon, when a suspect attacked an officer.

Gary Chief Derrick Cannon said the suspect attempted to rob the undercover officer with a "machete-style weapon" when they met up for a staged sale.

A man was shot to death Wednesday afternoon by Gary police after allegedly attacking officers with a "machete-style weapon" during an undercover investigation, authorities said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s office says Gary police were taking part in what’s being called an undercover investigation on Maryland Street near East 34th Avenue just before 12:20 p.m. when they say a suspect attacked an officer with a machete.
