A legislative committee in Louisiana has approved the popular parts of Gov. Jeff Landry's tax plan, but obstacles loom.

If approved by the full House and Senate, the plan would eliminate the current tax brackets and move the state closer to eliminating the income tax.

Reports this week listed Landry, former Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker and Missouri U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt as leading candidates for the appointment.

Louisiana lawmakers began debating bills Thursday that would revamp the state's tax code by lowering income taxes for all workers while adding sales taxes to services not currently taxed and raising the state sales tax rate permanently.

The special session on tax reform is underway at the State Capitol and Gov. Jeff Landry is encouraging lawmakers to pass all his bills to revise the state’s tax code. Landry’s proposal will reduce individual and corporate income taxes while expanding sales tax to more goods and services.
