Missourians voted Tuesday night to protect abortion rights, raise the minimum wage and guarantee paid sick leave for workers. They also voted by wide margins to send Republicans to Jefferson City who vehemently oppose those proposals and may try to roll them back.

Missouri’s current law bans abortion with almost no exceptions and this amendment would allow abortion to about 24 weeks of pregnancy.

This amendment would establish a constitutional right to reproductive rights and would remove Missouri's ban on abortion.

When Missouri on Tuesday became the first state to overturn a near-total abortion ban by the vote of the people, Desiree White cried happy tears. Twenty-five years earlier, she and her husband chose to terminate a pregnancy they very much wanted after they received a diagnosis of a fatal fetal abnormality.

Missourians approved Amendment 3, which would place language in the state constitution legalizing abortion. Abortion rights proponents plan to file lawsuits to strike down the state’s near-total ban.
