California voters approved a ballot measure Tuesday seeking harsher punishment for retail crimes including shoplifting and theft. Repeat offenders may now be charged with felonies under Proposition 36,

California voters are deciding on 10 statewide propositions on the ballot. The one likely to get the most attention is a measure that makes shoplifting a felony for repeat offenders, harden penalties for fentanyl dealers and require drug users to get treatment.

Prop. 36 is an attempt to unwind Prop. 47, a prop passed 10 years ago in an effort to reduce California's prison overcrowding by making some theft and drug crimes into misdemeanors. Prosecutors, police and big box retailers have blamed the law for an increase in property crimes and homelessness.
