The aurora was the result of a massive solar flare, the strongest since 2017, that the sun unleashed late last week.

UK sky-watchers on Monday night were treated to the rare phenomenon known as Steve. While Steve can look like the aurora and often appears during a showing of the Northern Lights, it is fundamentally different.

Of course we’re nearing Halloween, which is 27 days away, but you don’t have to wait too long to see a spooky sight in the sky. The aurora borealis, or northern lights, may be visible as we near the weekend with a much stronger geomagnetic storm than initially thought.
