While no communities in Wisconsin allow noncitizens to vote, Republicans want to prevent that possibility in the future by amending the constitution.

In addition to the candidates on the ballot, voters will also be asked to decide on a proposed state constitutional amendment, which would explicitly say that only U.S. citizens can vote in elections held in Wisconsin.

A referendum item on the ballot in November will ask voters to decide if wording on voting eligibility within the state’s constitution should read that “only” a U.S. citizen, who is 18 years or older and a state resident, may vote in any national, state or local office or at a statewide or local referendum.

Wisconsin voters will decide in November whether to amend the state constitution to expressly prohibit noncitizens from voting in local elections.
