The trading debut of Tokyo Metro Co., which runs one of the world’s largest subway systems, is set to support the bull case for the Japanese stock market after an oversubscribed public offering.

Tokyo Metro, the underground railway network that carries more than 6.5mn passengers a day through the Japanese capital at levels of punctuality and cleanliness envied around the world, will list its shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Wednesday in the country’s biggest initial public offering in six years.

"The company might have slow capital growth, but it's a very, very safe investment," Francisco Betancourt, a French retail investor told Bloomberg. Betancourt plans to buy shares in the metro, noting Tokyo is one of the few Japanese cities with a growing population.

The subway operator’s promise of perks, which include free entry to the Tokyo Metro Museum, aims to “promote stock ownership among individual investors, who can be stable shareholders over the medium-to-long term,” according to Takuya Yashima, a company spokesperson.
