A wildfire started in the Somis area on Wednesday morning and tore through 22 square miles by the evening, destroying dozens of homes, sending residents to the hospital and forcing evacuations in Ventura, Camarillo, Santa Paula, Fillmore and points in between.

It’s unclear how many homes have been destroyed by the Mountain Fire. Officials said they plan to send out damage assessment support teams who will be going door-to-door in the communities impacted by the fire.

CAMARILLO, Calif. -- Thousands of residents were forced to flee a fast-moving wildfire, called the Mountain Fire, in Ventura County that has already damaged multiple homes. Chris Cristi in AIR7 estimated that at least 40-50 homes have burned from what he could see.

Santa Ana winds impacting Ventura County have made the fire more difficult to extinguish, the Fire Department said.

An out-of-control wildfire fueled by heavy winds was tearing through a community northwest of Los Angeles for a second day Thursday.
