The story “A living nightmare” (Oct. 29) of a Minneapolis man allegedly shot by his neighbor following a year of racial harassment from the shooter is horribly tragic, and my heart breaks for the victim and his wife. But this incident is part of a larger and ultimately more tragic story.

Minneapolis police have taken a man into custody almost a week after he allegedly shot his neighbor in the neck – the culmination of a monthslong campaign of racial harassment and threats, according to local reports and court documents.

The recent shooting of Davis Moturi in Minneapolis has sparked outrage and demands for accountability from local officials and community members.

The Minneapolis Police Department again finds itself at the center of controversy over race and policing, after failing to arrest a man with active warrants before he allegedly shot Davis Moturi, and then waiting several days before taking the alleged shooter into custody.

The documents accuse John Sawchak of striking a neighbor with a wooden stick, slashing the tires of a police car and threatening to kill other neighbors.

Davis Moturi was allegedly shot by his neighbor John Sawchak on Wednesday, Oct. 23. Moturi was hospitalized with a fractured spine, two broken ribs and a concussion.
