South Korea's media regulator said on Monday that Telegram has pledged to adopt a zero-tolerance policy and immediately remove deepfake pornography and other illegal content from its platform, in cooperation with local authorities.

The Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) announced that it held a face-to-face working-level meeting with Telegram on Friday to address concerns regarding deepfake content featuring altered images of Korean women that have emerged on the platform in recent months.

The “sudden move” by Telegram to cooperate with the South Korean authorities could be tied to the arrest in France of the app’s chief Pavel Durov, on charges of failing to act against criminals, a cyber-security professor told AFP.
