Jun 9, 2007 · Still 700C. Actual diameter of the rim is 622mm I think vs. a 27" which is 630mm. Add to that the fact that back in the day, 27" rims were typically shod with large, high profile 27x1 1/4" tires while the 28's were usually fitted with narrow/low profile tubulars so they would have been even smaller.

Sep 19, 2006 · Ther difference in efficiency between large 700c and small 26" (MTB) is pretty small if using similar style tyres. Many professional cycle couriers use MTB size wheels and they need to be quick. The ideal style would be a lightweight non-suspension frame using a high pressure road tyre (1.5" wide slick).

Dec 12, 2006 · On road bikes, most people are running 23 to 28 mm wide tires. Some 32 mm wide. Tires of 622 BSD are more commonly called 700C to add to the confusion. Oh crap! Yes, the extra 38mm of space, or 19mm each side will make a huge difference for fitting the wheels in. I may still have to take the tires off, or maybe it’s enough to let the air out and squish the tires in, but the rims won’t be touching the sides now.
